Update on Berlin Trip

During the child and adolescent psychopathology course on Monday Dr. Hugh Van Auken had a little present for the folks going to the conference. The Top 10 Berlin travel books. Needless to say, that book has me hyped up even more. My German is shoddy at best, and this is going to be a big helper considering it actually comes with a small phrase book in the back, along with 5 different types of maps. Seriously how cool! As I flipped through it, now very anxious, to what I might see, I must confront what is going to be unmissable
by any standard. So far the running list is of the following.
  1. Gemäldegalerie
  2. Haus am Checkpoint Charlie
    1. Awesome historical event that is related
  3. Musikinstrumenten-museum
  4. Brandeburger Tor
  5. Reichstag
  6. Konzerthaus
  7. Schloss Charlottenburg
There are many others, but those are the ones that so far really stand out. Since our hotel, the Marriott in Berlin is located in Potsdamer Platz we are merely short walks from some of the most profound locations in Berlin. The Reichstag is less than 2 km away! We are literally a stones throw from the Sony Center (actually we will most likely have a view of it from our window--seeing as it is across the street). What a view!

We psych majors are getting pumped--psyched if you will.

Psychology 497

Obviously, with the six references to what course level this is, and where it is offered we all know it is PSYC-497 offered at Holy Cross College, Notre Dame (South Bend), Indiana. But no-one outside of the individuals going really knows what it is. So as per Dr. Dorris and Hugh Van Auken,

Special Topics in Psychology

The Twenty-Ninth International Congress of Psychology

Berlin, Germany

July 20-25, 2008

Invitation

You are invited to register for an exciting new class being offered at Holy Cross College: PSYC 497, Special Topics in Psychology, the Twenty-Ninth International Congress in Psychology. The Congress will be held in Berlin, Germany, July 20 to 25, 2008. A select group of Holy Cross College psychology students are being invited to apply for this class and attend this exciting psychology event in Europe.

Dr. Doris M. Van Auken, Ph.D. will lead a group of five-to-six students to Germany. Students will depart the United States on Thursday evening, July 17, 2008, arriving in Berlin, Germany on Friday, July 18. Students will participate in one full-day cultural learning experience that will include a visit to a Nazi concentration camp, a tour of underground World War Two munitions production facilities, and a group dinner in the UNESCO World Heritage village of Goslar in the Harz Mountains. Additional cultural learning activities are also planned. Students will attend a variety of Congress events including symposia, lectures, debates, and poster sessions. Students will depart Germany on Saturday, July 26, 2008.

Students will write a journal of their daily activities on the trip including the cultural learning experiences and Congress events. Students will also write a research proposal based on a presentation attended during the Congress. This research proposal can then become a component of your Capstone project.

This is a unique learning opportunity experienced by only a handful of American college students. If you are considering graduate study in psychology, participation in this class will provide an exciting introduction to the profession of psychology, an outstanding addition to your student resume, and an excellent opportunity to explore Germany.

During the first week in January, the faculty Academic Council will finalize details of this course. At that time, you will receive an email providing further details. As is the case with other Holy Cross College international learning trips, students will be required to provide a non-refundable deposit for this course.

The Academic Council will be provided with an estimate of the number of students intending to enroll at their January 7, 2008 meeting. Also, please keep in mind that the larger the number of students enrolled in the class, the lower the per person cost of the trip. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Doris M. Van Auken, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Psychology

Chair, Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Holy Cross College

So, needless to say we are all looking forward to this.
